Mapus-Smith & Lemmon LLP Employee received top accolade
Accountant Donna James of Mapus-Smith & Lemmon LLP has received a significant award from the East Anglian Society of Chartered Accountants (EASCA).
The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW) runs annual awards through its regional bodies, such as EASCA, to recognise students achieving the highest marks in both the Advanced Stage and Professional Stage of exams. Competing with students from considerably larger accountancy firms, Donna James took third place in the Advanced Stage and received her award at EASCA’s annual dinner in Newmarket, last week.
Donna, aged 24, joined us in 2005 from Downham Market Sixth Form College. She completed her accountancy technician training within two years and began studying for her chartered accountancy exams at 21, passing her final exam to become a fully qualified chartered accountant last November.
Sharon Edwards, the firm’s partner in charge of training said: “To come third in the Advanced Stage is a considerable achievement. The awards usually go to students from the larger firms. We are all thrilled for Donna.”
Even though Donna has completed 12 exams for the professional stage and a further three for the advanced stage, she continues to study alongside her full-time work at Mapus-Smith & Lemmon.
“I’m studying for my chartered tax qualification now,” said Donna James, who is specialising in personal and corporate tax affairs. “I am so pleased I found this route to my career rather than going to university. It is hard work but I really appreciate the fact that my training is funded by Mapus-Smith & Lemmon and I can turn to any of the partners for help. I’m thrilled to have won the award – it helps me show my gratitude to the firm.”

Norfolk accountants’ biggest intake of school leavers
As over-subscribed universities turn away school leavers in their thousands, one West Norfolk business has recruited its biggest annual intake ever.
Accountancy firm Mapus-Smith & Lemmon LLP has welcomed seven school leavers for this year’s training programme.
All from local schools, the new recruits have the opportunity to qualify as accountants with training funded by the firm. They are Robyn Edwards ex Springwood, Kings Lynn, Jemma Sutterby from the College of West Anglia, Edward Cottington ex King Edward School, Kings Lynn and David Lawrence, Daniel Bullock, James Rix and James Smolen all from Downham Market College.
Given the current employment climate this move seems to buck the trend but recruiting and training school leavers has been a long-standing policy for Mapus-Smith & Lemmon, which has offices in Kings Lynn and Downham Market.
Partners Paul Farrow and Jason Hall joined the firm as school leavers, training first as accounting technicians and then as chartered accountants.
Senior partner Michael Jay commented:
“We have recently participated in a careers workshop at Downham Market College to show students the very real opportunities involved with a career in accountancy. I am also a volunteer with the educational charity The Personal Finance Education Group and able to work in schools to help teachers if required. Our business is such that we have regular training opportunities throughout the year, but have found it is easier to have one main intake of students.”
